How we make fitted wardrobes for High Barnet

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in High Barnet, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around High Barnet, so it is a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Fitted wardrobes in High Barnet: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the area around High Barnet went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of High Barnet is within about a quarter of a mile of the Wood Street Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around High Barnet, about 42% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 20%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.9 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your children go to Foulds School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For an older house near Christ Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Hadley Wood station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in High Barnet?

Yes, High Barnet is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
