Fitted wardrobes in East Finchley
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If your home has empty alcoves in the bedroom and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Fitted wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Every wall in East Finchley homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in East Finchley
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in East Finchley?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How do I get started?
It’s easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
What happens during the design visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We talk through both during the design visit.
What it is made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside as you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

We go through parking and access during the design visit.

How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Arranging a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
