Fitted wardrobes in Finchley, Barnet

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Finchley starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Fitted wardrobes in Finchley: what you get

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts don’t waste height. It’s useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. If your home has clothes with nowhere proper to go and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Finchley, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Finchley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Finchley?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Finchley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. You choose the colour, and it is easy to refresh in future.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. Its height can be set to match the skirting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Finchley

About 47% of the homes in the streets around Finchley went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Finchley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 47% of homes in the area around Finchley were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths.

Heath Hall, about 1.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Near listed buildings like The Manor House, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre of Finchley, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Finchley, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
