  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Hendon?

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in awkward spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

If you live near Hendon Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Fitted wardrobes in Hendon: what you get

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. If you are living with clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage typically goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Hendon, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Hendon homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hendon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and before 1919 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hendon. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Barnet sets its own rules. Where a street in Hendon is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Heath Hall, about 2.3 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Hendon station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do you cover homes near Hendon station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hendon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe to help avoid condensation and mould.

How we price fitted wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
