We make fitted wardrobes in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in Arkley. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
Fitted wardrobes designed for your room
How we make fitted wardrobes for Arkley
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.
Around Arkley, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What affects the price in Arkley
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
Helping us understand the room
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Your postcode and the borough
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- How you want to use the space
To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Bedroom storage in Arkley
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Arkley, with about 33% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Arkley, Historic England’s list includes Arkley Windmill (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-west, and Church of St Peter (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 35% of homes in the area around Arkley were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.
If you live near Whitings Hill Open Space, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For families living near Whitings Hill Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Arkley
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Arkley?
Yes. Arkley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Arkley?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls, so the doors line up properly.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, using moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s normally a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Why us?
- Work across the whole of London
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- A spray or hand-painted finish
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.
Honest limits
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Structural changes to the room
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it is made from
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Materials and finishes
Hanging rails
Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Getting a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
