Fitted Wardrobes in Ruxley

Fitted wardrobes in Ruxley: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. We visit to measure and talk through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Ruxley

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

Internal walls in post-war homes can be lightweight partitions rather than solid block, so tall pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back where the wall allows. With many of the homes around Ruxley built in the post-war years, each wall is checked before anything is designed. Nothing heavy relies on a thin wall alone.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitted wardrobes in Ruxley: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Ruxley were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 51%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Ruxley. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ruxley (about 51%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.

For a flat near Albany Park station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Ruxley Farmhouse, less than half a mile south of the centre of Ruxley, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St Botolph's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Advice

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly for a smooth finish. You choose the colour before we start.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.

Questions from Ruxley

Is Ruxley in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, Ruxley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Albany Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That is why we measure the route, not just the room. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

How we price fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a written quote after the visit.
