Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

About our fitted wardrobes in Northumberland Heath

Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Northumberland Heath, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bedroom storage in Northumberland Heath

About 40% of the homes in the streets around Northumberland Heath went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Northumberland Heath. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 26% of homes in the area around Northumberland Heath were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

If your children go to King Henry School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For an older house near St Paul's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Braeburn Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Northumberland Heath?

Yes, we work across Bexley, Northumberland Heath included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Do you cover homes near Barnehurst station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Is bespoke worth it?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
