About fitted wardrobes in Bexley

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no space in front for doors to swing and not enough hanging space.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

What goes into your quote

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Bexley

From Sidcup, Welling and Erith to the quieter streets, bedrooms across Bexley range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

In Bexley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 41% of homes in Bexley date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 52% of households in Bexley live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules.

Sidcup: Danson House, about 1.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Waring Park, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there is usually a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

Hanging rails

We keep the top rail at a height you can reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Bexley

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

Where is the furniture made?

We make it in our workshop. After that, we fit it in your home.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
