Fitted wardrobes in South Woodford

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom typically needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Too little room for clothes
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall

For a family home near Oakdale Infants' School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

How we make fitted wardrobes for South Woodford

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are damp or musty clothes against an external wall and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Fitted furniture can suit each, sized and laid out for the room. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Bedrooms in South Woodford: local notes

About 29% of the homes in the area around South Woodford went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The George Lane Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of South Woodford. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in South Woodford, let us know at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near The Highams Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Valentines Mansion, about 2.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

South Woodford is about 1 mile north of Woodford, in the London Borough of Redbridge. We cover South Woodford as part of our work across Redbridge. We list South Woodford among 18 places we cover in Redbridge.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in South Woodford

Several things affect the price:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in South Woodford?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, South Woodford included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

I live near Wood Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
