Upper Walthamstow Wall Beds

Planning wall beds for a home in Upper Walthamstow? We start with a design visit and a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A flexible room for a growing family

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Wall beds in Upper Walthamstow

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. If you are living with storage built around a fold-down bed and a playroom that can sleep visitors, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

The positions of the window, the radiator and the door shape a bedroom more than its size. For any home in Upper Walthamstow, those are the first things we note at the design visit, then plan fitted furniture on the walls that are left. Nothing is built tight over a radiator, so the heat still reaches the room.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Why bespoke in Upper Walthamstow?

Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which can make a small room usable. Standalone furniture leaves gaps behind and above it that gather dust, and fitted furniture closes them, which makes cleaning simpler.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, message us from the contact page.

Why us?

  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • 300+ projects completed

The problems wall beds solve

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter in the Forest, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and talk through the design. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Questions from Upper Walthamstow

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upper Walthamstow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

My home in Upper Walthamstow is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall, so the whole wall is useful. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Wall beds for homes in Upper Walthamstow

Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the streets around Upper Walthamstow, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Upper Walthamstow, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Waltham Forest included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Upper Walthamstow is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 2.9 miles east. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Walthamstow House (Corpus Christi School), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
