How we make fitted home offices for Bedford Park

Storage keeps a home office calm. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the desk stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Bedford Park. If you are living with work things on show in the evening and wires with no tidy route, that is what home offices are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a bay window in the front room, and the alcoves beside the chimney breast can take books and files. Around Bedford Park, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, a room like that can work as a study and still feel like part of the house. Everything is scribed to the room’s own walls.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Bedford Park

My home in Bedford Park is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The office is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

That’s work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Looking after your furniture

People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Note how many files and books you need to store

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is typically all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.

Do not overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design. It is useful to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Do you need fitted home offices in Bedford Park?

An alcove, a landing or a space under the eaves can often take a desk. Off-the-shelf desks rarely fit these spaces. A desk made for the space puts it to good use.

Requests we hear often include:

  • No way to put work away
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • A room with two jobs to do
  • An awkward space with no furniture that fits

If you live near Turnham Green, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Working from home in Bedford Park

In the area around Bedford Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Bedford Park, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 42% of households in the area around Bedford Park, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hogarth's House, about 0.9 miles south. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Near listed buildings like Church of St Michael and All Angels, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Bedford Park, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
