Fitted wardrobes in Bedford Park: what you get
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and wardrobes that are full to bursting.
A large share of the homes around Bedford Park were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Not enough hanging space
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
Hogarth's House, about 0.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Have they thought about parking near you?
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Birch plywood
For drawers that are used every day, birch plywood boxes are hard-wearing, so they hold their shape.
How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You send us some details about the room and the storage you need, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
How to prepare
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Ask for a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Bedford Park
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
I live in a flat in Bedford Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Bedrooms in Bedford Park: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Bedford Park, with about 20% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Bedford Park is within about a quarter of a mile of the Bedford Park Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 23% of households in the neighbourhood around Bedford Park, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Michael and All Angels, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Bedford Park, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near South Acton station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
