Bedford Park Built-in Bookshelves
In Bedford Park, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
- Shelves that sag under books

Questions from Bedford Park
I live near South Acton station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Bedford Park?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.
About our built-in bookshelves in Bedford Park
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage for children’s books and games and bare walls that could hold shelving.
In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. Around Bedford Park, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that’s a common starting point. The recesses either side take built-in bookshelves scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- The bookcase is made in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.
Before we arrive
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.
Advice
The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them, and that’s where bespoke shelving helps.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Shelving that frames a window
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelves that sag under books
If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
Bedford Park homes and built-in bookshelves
About 55% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Bedford Park went up before 1919, and about 20% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Bedford Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Michael and All Angels (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Voysey House (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Around Bedford Park, about 55% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
For families living near Southfield Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Turnham Green? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
