Home working in Acton Green: local notes
In the area around Acton Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 51%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Acton Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Acton Green. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around Acton Green, about 51% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Michael and All Angels, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre of Acton Green, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near South Acton station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Ark Priory Primary Academy, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.
Acton Green is part of the London Borough of Ealing, about 2 miles west of Ealing. Wherever you are in Acton Green, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. We list Acton Green among 19 places we cover in Ealing.

How we make fitted home offices for Acton Green
We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Acton Green and fitted. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a desk buried under papers and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Acton Green date from then. Shelving can go up high above the desk, with the top shelves for things you rarely need. Some internal walls in older houses are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Doors and drawer fronts
Cupboard doors hide the clutter of working life. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. At the end of the day, work can be closed away.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

- The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work, with cable routes left clear.

What we don’t do
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Connecting printers and screens
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Building a loft conversion, which isn’t our work

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Common questions about fitted home offices
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Acton Green?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Acton Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
What are your built-in desks made from?
Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
