Fitted home offices for your home in Shepherd's Bush

Fitted home offices in Shepherd's Bush: what you get

A spare room often makes the best home office, particularly if it still needs to work as a guest room. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Shepherd's Bush. If your home has wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day and cables trailing across the desk and floor, that is what home offices are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around Shepherd's Bush, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. An alcove is often just wide enough for a desk, with shelves above, which keeps work in its own corner of the room. The pieces are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Check whether you’ll need new sockets
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

If you are having new sockets fitted, your electrician can do that around the furniture as planned. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Tidy cables keep the office looking calm.

Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Keep liquids away from the edge. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Getting ready for fitting day

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Do you cover homes near Shepherds Bush station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

I live in a flat in Shepherd's Bush. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Can a home office double as a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. We will look at the options at the measuring visit.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. It’s useful to agree the positions at the design visit.

Fitted home offices in Shepherd's Bush: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the area around Shepherd's Bush, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 7 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Shepherd's Bush. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Shepherd's Bush is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Hammersmith Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. If your home is one of the older houses near Shepherd's Bush Tabernacle, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Shelves

We can make fixed shelves, adjustable ones, or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to tall units, and adjustable shelves leave room to change.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Wires with no tidy route
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • A guest room that is needed for work
  • A desk in the wrong light

For families living near Addison Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

What to check before you book

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
