Bushey Mead Fitted Home Offices

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted home offices in Bushey Mead starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A screen that’s hard to read by the window
  • No way to put work away

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Fitted home offices in Bushey Mead

Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. At the design visit in Bushey Mead, we will see what fits. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a screen that’s hard to read by the window and paperwork and files with nowhere to go.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Around Bushey Mead, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the home office we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Fitted home offices in Bushey Mead: local notes

About 39% of the homes in the area around Bushey Mead went up before 1919, and about 33% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Bushey Mead. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Around a third of the homes in the area around Bushey Mead (about 33%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead.

Near listed buildings like Methodist Church, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Bushey Mead, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Cannon Hill Common? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the office.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Related advice

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. A kitchen table or a corner of the bedroom soon stops working. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • No way to put work away
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • No proper place to work from home

For an older house near Dundonald Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Is bespoke worth it?

A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. A single design gives the room clean, consistent lines. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bushey Mead?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Bushey Mead?

Yes, we work across Merton, Bushey Mead included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Which materials go into your home offices?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you add power points to the desk?

We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
