Fitted home offices for homes in West Barnes

Each home office is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in West Barnes and fitted. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about shelves that sag under books and files and cables trailing across the desk and floor.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around West Barnes, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Fitted home offices in West Barnes: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 46% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Barnes, with about 25% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of West Barnes. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Merton is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in West Barnes. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

Southside House, about 1.1 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Close to Beverley Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For a family home near Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and stiff. Where the span is long, we add thickness or support.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers can form a pedestal under the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. We plan it at the design visit.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Your questions about fitted home offices in West Barnes

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in West Barnes?

Yes, we work across Merton, West Barnes included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Barnes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What does a built-in desk cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
