About our fitted home offices in Hanwell
Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. At the design visit in Hanwell, we will see what fits. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about working at the kitchen table and a desk in the wrong light.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Hanwell, the spare room in a period house is often small, with a sash window and a chimney breast. A built-in desk, shelving and closed storage can fit even a modest room. Cable routes are planned so they run neatly to the sockets, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What fitted home offices cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Changes to the structure of the house
- Converting a loft to make room for an office
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

- Built-in desks

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It helps to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Getting a quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Your questions about fitted home offices in Hanwell
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hanwell station?
Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in Hanwell?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
New sockets need an electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Fitted home offices for homes in Hanwell
In the streets around Hanwell, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Hanwell. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 53% of homes in the streets around Hanwell were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.
Living in a block of flats near Hanwell station? Then home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near Church of St Mellitus, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made desks rarely plan for cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
