About fitted wardrobes in W13

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Most enquiries start with dusty space on top of the wardrobe and space under the eaves going to waste; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Bedroom storage across W13

Across W13, including Northfields, South Ealing and Hanwell, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in W13, with about 15% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 54% of homes in the W13 postcode district were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the W13 postcode district, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and W13 is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and talk through the design.

Ealing: Pitzhanger Manor, about 0.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near St Saviour's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Building work to create a loft room

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.

What to check before you book

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Let us know which walls face outside

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then so the doors run smoothly. Do not let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.

Questions we’re often asked

Is the furniture made to order?

It’s made at our workshop. After that, we fit it in your home.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.
