  • An awkward space with no furniture that fits
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • A guest room that’s needed for work

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
  • Choose a calm colour for a working room
  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Don’t overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

How we make fitted home offices for Harmondsworth

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In Harmondsworth, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and an alcove or landing that could take a desk.

A good part of the housing around Harmondsworth is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a 1930s house, the small room over the stairs often becomes the study, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. A room that size can take a desk, shelves and cupboards.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Working from home in Harmondsworth

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Harmondsworth were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Part of Harmondsworth is in the Harmondsworth Village Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Harmondsworth is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a flat near Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to Harmondsworth Primary School or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Building a loft conversion, which is not our work
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions from Harmondsworth

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Harmondsworth?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Harmondsworth?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We’ll tell you honestly when we visit.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

That’s work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. The office is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
