About our fitted home offices in Ruislip
Storage keeps a home office calm. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the work surface stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Ruislip. If you’re living with a tangle of chargers and leads and a laptop that moves from room to room, that is what home offices are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a house with several bedrooms, the question is often which room works best as an office. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up much of the housing around Ruislip, and they can offer a choice of rooms. Light, noise and where the broadband comes in all matter. The design visit is a good time to discuss the options.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Home working in Ruislip: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Ruislip were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Ruislip include Lady Bankes School (Grade II), under half a mile south, and High Grove House (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 68% of households in the area around Ruislip, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
If you live in a period home close to St Lawrence, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live in a flat close to West Ruislip station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Church Field Gardens, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:
- Check whether you will need new sockets
- Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. That way, you can start work straight away.
A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Pushing it in gently helps. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

What it’s made from
Shelves
Office shelving often carries heavy loads. Span, depth and load all matter. Each shelf is made to stay straight under what you plan to store.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Your questions about fitted home offices in Ruislip
I live near West Ruislip station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Ruislip?
Yes. Ruislip is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hillingdon and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on.
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The office is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Getting a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
