Flats, leases and landlords
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Harmondsworth
The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage usually goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Harmondsworth, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions from Harmondsworth
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
What happens when you come to measure?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Why bespoke in Harmondsworth?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Why choose us
- Work across the whole of London
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- More than 300 projects completed

Fitted wardrobes in Harmondsworth: local notes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 34% of the housing in the streets around Harmondsworth, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Harmondsworth. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Harmondsworth is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Church of St Mary, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For families living near Harmondsworth Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- We send a written quote.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Arranging a design visit

Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.
Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
