How we make fitted wardrobes for IG1

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it, which helps keep mould away. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What goes into your quote

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Bedroom storage across IG1

In IG1, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.

About 46% of the homes in IG1 went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 46% of homes in IG1 were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. Terraced houses are home to about 37% of households in IG1, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Ilford: If your children go to Winston Way Academy or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 0.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in IG1

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

How do I get a quote?

Just get in touch through our contact form. It is useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
