Fitted wardrobes in IG3: how it works

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It’s useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. Most enquiries start with a bedroom that never feels tidy and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

What goes into your quote

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted wardrobes across IG3: local notes

IG3 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

The biggest shares of homes in IG3 were built before 1919 (about 40%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 40% of homes in the IG3 postcode district were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older bedrooms normally have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. About 26% of homes in IG3 date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Seven Kings: If your children go to Downshall Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Close to South Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there is room to open them, hinged doors give full access. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.

Plinths and scribe strips

In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes the wardrobe look built in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

What affects the price in IG3

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in IG3

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
