Fitted home offices in North Ockendon: what you get

A good home office has a place for everything. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the work surface stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. For a home in North Ockendon, we design it all around what you need to store. Typical reasons to get in touch are glare from a window on the screen and a desk buried under papers, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around North Ockendon, a dining room or spare bedroom is often the room that has to double as an office. A built-in desk with doors that close over it lets the room go back to its other job at the end of the day. Cable routes and the position of sockets are planned into the design.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Note what sits on and around your desk
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, message us from the contact page and describe it.

FAQs: fitted home offices in North Ockendon

Do you cover homes near Ockendon station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Ockendon?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

That depends on the size of the alcove. Lots of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelves and storage around it. We’ll tell you honestly when we visit.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

That depends on the space you have. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. At the design visit, we’ll suggest what works.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the space.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

North Ockendon homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around North Ockendon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 73%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. North Ockendon is partly covered by the North Ockendon Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 73% of homes in the area around North Ockendon date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office.

Living in a block of flats near Ockendon station? Then home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Magdalene, under half a mile south of the centre of North Ockendon, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near The James Oglethorpe Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

Why bespoke in North Ockendon?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

How it’s made

Shelves

Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. Span, depth and load all matter. Each shelf is made to stay straight under what you plan to store.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Building a loft conversion, which is not our work

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.
