North Ockendon TV and Media Units

In North Ockendon, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. We design your TV unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Wasted space around the screen
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

TV and media units in North Ockendon

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That is work for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in. Most enquiries start with empty alcoves beside the TV and somewhere to keep games tidy, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around North Ockendon, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What we do not do

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

What affects the price in North Ockendon

Several things affect the price:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you get in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Ockendon station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Ockendon?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How do you hide the TV cables?

Cable routes are built into the design, with access panels for later changes. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket, with a route for the cables. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Living in a block of flats near Ockendon station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary Magdalene, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary Magdalene, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
