North Ockendon Loft Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in North Ockendon starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • Needing storage in a loft office

What affects the price in North Ockendon

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What to send when you contact us

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

For a quote for loft storage in North Ockendon, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough sizes. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

How we make loft storage for North Ockendon

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route not just the room, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s part of the job for any loft room in North Ockendon. Typical reasons to get in touch are unused space in a dormer and wasted space behind the knee walls; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around North Ockendon, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it’s worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go

When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Common questions about loft storage

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Ockendon station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Altering the structure of the loft
  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the back of the eaves within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. They’re ideal for clothes and bedding.

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft floors are often out of level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so everything opens and closes as it should.

Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Ockendon station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
