Hampton Fitted Home Offices
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted home offices in Hampton starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Shelving that bows under the load
- Working at the kitchen table
- A room with two jobs to do

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How we make fitted home offices for Hampton
A good home office has a place for everything. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the desk stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Hampton. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wires with no tidy route and glare from a window on the screen.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Hampton, a dining room or spare bedroom is often the room that has to double as an office. A built-in desk with doors that close over it lets the room go back to its other job at the end of the day. We plan the cable routes around your sockets.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the home office designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Questions we are often asked
I live near Hampton station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hampton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
How long does it take to fit a home office?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We’ll check the size during the design visit.
What are your built-in desks made from?
Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Home offices arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
How we price fitted home offices
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Parking near your home
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Before the design visit
To help us picture the room, please include:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
How it is made
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It suits desks, long shelves and drawer boxes. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Fitted home offices in Hampton: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hampton were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hampton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Fewer homes around Hampton date from before 1919 than across Richmond upon Thames: about 18%, against about 38%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So the walls behind home offices here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked at the measuring visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Strawberry Hill House, about 2 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If your children go to Hampton Infant School and Nursery or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. Close to Carlisle Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
