How we make fitted home offices for Ham
Light matters in a home office. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We will suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. We look at it early during the design visit in Ham. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a laptop that moves from room to room and files and folders piling up.
Ceilings in post-war homes are usually lower than in older houses, so shelving above a desk can run right to the ceiling and still be within reach. Around Ham, many homes date from the post-war decades. Shelf spans are chosen so files and books do not bow them.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Working from home in Ham
About 63% of the homes in the streets around Ham went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 20% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Ham, Historic England’s list includes Sudbrook Lodge (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Manor House (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Ham is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live near Sudbrook Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If your children go to Meadlands Primary School or a school nearby, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.
Ham is about 1 mile north-west of Twickenham, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. We can visit homes in Ham on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. In Richmond upon Thames, Ham is one of the places we cover.
Design visits and fitting in TW10, KT2 and TW11 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets such as New Road, Lock Road and Cave Road, for fitted home offices and any of our other fitted furniture. Ham is near the A307, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted home offices include Petersham (1 mile north), Eel Pie Island (1 mile north-west), Strawberry Hill (1 mile west), Teddington (1 mile south-west) and Richmond (1 mile north). Other parts of Richmond upon Thames we cover include Richmond upon Thames (2 miles north), Hampton (3 miles west), Barnes (4 miles north-east), Kew (4 miles north-east), Hanworth (3 miles west) and Mortlake (3 miles north-east).

What happens on fitting day
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Tell us about parking near your home
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Is it time for fitted home offices?
Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. It keeps the work surface clear.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
- Working at the kitchen table
- Files and folders piling up
- A screen that is hard to read by the window
If you live in a flat close to Teddington station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Caring for painted furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Note what sits on and around your desk
- Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
- Look at the window and where the light falls
- Mention any parking rules on your street
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. We’ll show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. You’ll be ready to set up your desk.
Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Tight cables can mark edges over time. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF cuts cleanly, which suits panelled doors and the angled parts of a desk under a slope. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.
Birch plywood
A home office shelf often carries heavy books and folders. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and stiff. Long spans need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
Common questions about fitted home offices
Do you cover homes near Teddington station?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Ham?
Yes. Ham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so you can stand at the desk. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.
Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?
That comes down to the size of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelves and storage around it. We measure and give an honest view during the design visit.
How we price fitted home offices
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The internal fittings
- The number of doors and drawers
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
What to send when you contact us
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Approximate measurements of the space
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
