Petersham homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Petersham were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Petersham, Historic England’s list includes The Wick and Wick Cottage (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Marble Hill House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Petersham (about 48%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older houses can have lath-and-plaster internal walls and floors that slope, both of which matter when fixing a wall bed.

If you live in a flat close to St Margarets (London) station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near The Russell Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For an older house near St Peter's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Wall beds for homes in Petersham

We fit wall beds in Petersham and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, then a quote in writing. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know in advance. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a living room with a bed that folds away and a flexible room for a growing family.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Petersham are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What it is made from

Bed mechanism housing

We design the housing around the mechanism and the bed size you choose.

Shelves

We size each shelf for its span and load.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, with children kept well back while it moves.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.

Your questions about wall beds in Petersham

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Petersham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you cover homes near St Margarets (London) station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
