Fitted Home Offices in Shanklin Village

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted home offices in Shanklin Village starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Doors and drawer fronts

A desk can sit behind doors, out of sight when you are done. It suits a room that also has to work as a guest room or living room. We will go through the options during the design visit.

How we make fitted home offices for Shanklin Village

Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. We look at the sockets when we visit in Shanklin Village. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are files and folders piling up and an awkward space with no furniture that fits.

Most homes around Shanklin Village are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. A mansion block room may have alcoves and high ceilings that suit a desk with tall shelving, while newer flats often have stud walls that need suitable fixings. We plan cable routes around the sockets you have.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It helps to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Pricing fitted home offices in Shanklin Village

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions from Shanklin Village

My home in Shanklin Village is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Shanklin Village?

Yes. Shanklin Village is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you use our contact form.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The office is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Ready-made units can’t follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, leaving gaps or blocking access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
