Our fitted home offices across Brent

An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in Brent a workspace that looks part of the room. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no way to put work away and shelving that bows under the load.

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The office is built in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

What goes into your quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted home offices across Brent: local notes

Period homes in Brent often have alcoves just wide enough for a desk, and in newer flats a single wall in a spare room usually works. The design visit is where we compare the options.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in Brent, with about 28% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Around a third of the homes in Brent (about 32%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead. 29 of the 29 places in Brent with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Kilburn: If you live in a period home close to St Anne's and St Andrew's, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 1.7 miles east. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How big the furniture is

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits desks, panels and doors alike. It’s carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can echo the woodwork in an older room. The gaps are kept even all along.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Building a loft conversion, which isn’t our work
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms

Your questions about fitted home offices in Brent

Do you cover Brent?

Yes. We work across Brent.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you fit furniture for landlords?

Yes. It works the same way as any job: design visit, written quote, workshop, fitting. If the property is let, the agent can arrange access with the tenants.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?

Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.
