The problems fitted home offices solve
Some homes have an tricky space that could become an office. Off-the-shelf desks rarely fit these spaces. A desk made for the space puts it to good use.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- Files and folders piling up
- A room with two jobs to do
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
What to check before you book
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
How we make fitted home offices for Queen's Park
Everything in a home office starts with the desk. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in Queen's Park is where these choices are made. Most enquiries start with no proper place to work from home and a corner too odd for a standard desk; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a period house, a front-room bay gives a desk good daylight, while the recesses beside the chimney breast take shelving. If your home is one of the many around Queen's Park built before 1919, a room like that can work as a study and still feel like part of the house. Each piece follows the walls rather than a straight line.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Think about what will sit on the shelves
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. We’ll show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. That way, you can start work straight away.
Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.
Questions we’re often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Queen's Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you work in Queen's Park?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Queen's Park included.
Can a home office go in a loft room?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, and talk through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Why bespoke in Queen's Park?
Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Queen's Park
- We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
- Designed for the room you have
- Saturday work by arrangement
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Home working in Queen's Park: local notes
In the area around Queen's Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. 9 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Queen's Park. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Queen's Park is covered by it. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
Winfield House, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For an older house near West Kilburn Baptist Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
Queen's Park is about 1 mile north of Kilburn, within the London Borough of Brent. We design and make fitted home offices for homes in Queen's Park and across Brent, as part of our work in every London borough. We list Queen's Park among 29 places we cover in Brent.
In NW6, W9 and W10, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Kempe Road, Peach Road and Parry Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for fitted home offices. Other places close to Queen's Park include Kilburn (1 mile north), Kensal Rise (1 mile west), Kensal Town (1 mile south-west), Brondesbury (1 mile north) and Kensal Green (1 mile west). Elsewhere in Brent, we also cover Neasden (2 miles north-west), Harlesden (2 miles west), Wembley (4 miles north-west), Kenton (6 miles north-west), Church End (2 miles west) and Willesden (2 miles north-west). Queen's Park is one of the larger places we cover in Brent.
Around Queen's Park
The streets we cover here include those near The Brondesbury Arms, St Augustine's Church of England High School and Maida Vale School. Queen's Park has its own railway station: Queens Park (London) station. Nearby you’ll also find Paddington General Hospital (0.8 miles south) and O2 Centre (1.3 miles north-east). Open spaces near Queen's Park include Greville Place nature reserve.
When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
