Fitted home offices in Tyburn: what you get
Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, planned around how you work. For a home in Tyburn, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a tangle of chargers and leads and an alcove or landing that could take a desk.
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a bay window in the front room, while the recesses beside the chimney breast take shelving. Around Tyburn, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, a front room like that can become a study without losing its character. Everything is scribed to the room’s own walls.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office.
- The office furniture is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Common questions about fitted home offices
My house in Tyburn is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Tyburn?
Yes. Tyburn is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.
How long will the home office fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.
What materials do you use for home offices?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Working from home in Tyburn
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tyburn were built before 1919 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Tyburn is partly covered by the Bayswater Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Tyburn, a van will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what parking is near you during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Handel Hendrix House, about 0.8 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Near listed buildings like Home House (courtauld Institute), less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Tyburn, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.
Tyburn is part of the City of Westminster, about 1 mile east of City of Westminster. Design visits and fitting in Tyburn can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. We cover places right across Westminster.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
What affects the cost of fitted home offices
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The internal fittings
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How square the room is
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What the furniture needs to hold
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
