Aldwych Fitted Home Offices

We make fitted home offices for homes in Aldwych, designed around the room you have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • No proper place to work from home

Fitted home offices in Aldwych

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.

How we make fitted home offices for Aldwych

Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. We design routes through the desk and units for chargers, screens and printers. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. Talking it through during the design visit in Aldwych saves trouble later. Typical reasons to get in touch are no proper place to work from home and a screen that’s hard to read by the window, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A desk has to be level even when the floor isn’t, so desks in older homes are levelled on site. Around Aldwych, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so levelling is part of the plan from the first visit. Shelves above are scribed to the wall so the gaps stay even.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you contact us

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Getting a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Questions from Aldwych

How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Aldwych?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near London Charing Cross station?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Plenty of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelves and storage around it. We measure and give an honest view at the measuring visit.

How much does a fitted home office cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Aldwych homes and fitted home offices

In the streets around Aldwych, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Aldwych, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Le Strand (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Somerset House and King's College Old Building (Grade I), less than half a mile south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 76% of households in the neighbourhood around Aldwych live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a period home close to St Mary le Strand, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If your children go to St Clement Danes CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can echo the woodwork in an older room. The lines are kept neat and even.

Birch plywood

A home office shelf often carries heavy books and folders. We use birch plywood for shelves that carry a load. Long spans need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
