Fitted cupboards designed for your room
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
- Let us know how parking works on your street
- Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.
At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
About our fitted cupboards in Tyburn
Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If you are living with making use of an awkward alcove or corner and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway, fitted cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Tyburn are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Storage in Tyburn homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tyburn were built before 1919 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 350 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Tyburn. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance, especially for larger pieces.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Home House (courtauld Institute), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near London Paddington station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of the Annunciation, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
- We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Starting with a design visit
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home, after the cupboards are fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
Common questions about fitted cupboards
Does a conservation area in or near Tyburn affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Tyburn?
Yes, we work across Westminster, Tyburn included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
What are your cupboards made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
