Paddington Green Fitted Home Offices

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Paddington Green, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Files and folders piling up
  • No proper place to work from home
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Tell us about every device that needs a home

When we’ve finished fitting, the desk and storage are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Keep liquids away from the edge. A mat protects the area you use most.

How we make fitted home offices for Paddington Green

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, shaped by the way you work. For a home in Paddington Green, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If you’re living with a screen that’s hard to read by the window and a tangle of chargers and leads, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

If you take video calls, the shelves behind your desk are on show, so a mix of closed cupboards and open shelves keeps the view tidy. With most households around Paddington Green in purpose-built flats, the office often shares a room. A desk behind doors puts work away at the end of the day.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Why bespoke in Paddington Green?

For a plain desk on a flat wall, a ready-made option can do the job. A fitted office earns its place where the space is tricky or the storage matters. At the design visit, we’ll tell you honestly which approach suits your room. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What you get with us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • A design visit, then a written quote

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Converting a loft to make room for an office
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Filing drawers
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Built-in desks

The problems fitted home offices solve

The most common reason is working from home. The kitchen table works for a while, then it doesn’t. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • Wires with no tidy route
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • No proper place to work from home

If you live in a period home close to St Mary on Paddington Green Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Common questions about fitted home offices

My home in Paddington Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. We’ll look at the options during the design visit.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelves and storage around it. We measure and give an honest view at the measuring visit.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The office is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
