Loft storage in Woodcote Green
Loft storage in Woodcote Green: local notes
About 44% of the homes in the area around Woodcote Green went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Woodcote Green is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. More than a third of the homes in the area around Woodcote Green (about 44%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage.
If you live in a flat close to Reedham (London) station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Wallington High School for Girls, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Close to Carshalton Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

How we make loft storage for Woodcote Green
A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in Woodcote Green, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. People typically come to us about boxes piled on loft boards and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Woodcote Green, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What we do not do
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

- Sloped wardrobe tops
- Eaves doors and drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
From workshop to your room
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
- We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.
Preparing the room
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Arranging a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Loft walls are rarely straight, and floors are often out of level. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. Our storage is scribed to the room and set level, so the lines look right. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Caring for painted furniture
People planning loft storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
- Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
- Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.
Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
Common questions about loft storage
Is parking a problem for fitting in Woodcote Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Will eaves storage block the ventilation?
Not when it is planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We do not alter insulation or vents.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
