The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are a real mattress for visitors and hiding the bed when it’s not in use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Around Woodcote Green, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Is it time for wall beds?
Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- A studio that works by day and night
- A hobby room with a bed for guests
- A storage wall with a bed inside
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
For a family home near Wallington High School for Girls, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it is fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.
Spray-painted finish
The colour is agreed with you before we spray.
From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
Arranging a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Why bespoke in Woodcote Green?
Ready-made wall bed units are available and usually cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Questions from Woodcote Green
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Woodcote Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Woodcote Green?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
How much space does a wall bed need?
That depends on the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.
Do you fit furniture for landlords?
Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for homeowners. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.
