Loft storage for your home in Norbiton

About our loft storage in Norbiton

The space behind the knee wall typically has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this at the design visit in Norbiton. If you are living with a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Homes in an area like Norbiton can come from many different periods, so the awkward spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. Eaves cupboards are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions from Norbiton

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Norbiton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Norbiton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. We design eaves storage so it doesn’t block ventilation or squash insulation. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • Altering the structure of the loft

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where the finish is most on show.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the back of the eaves within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

About 24% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Norbiton went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Kingston upon Thames included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Norbiton is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Norbiton station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

The problems loft storage solve

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It is ideal for things you need now and then.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room

If you live near Canbury Gardens, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
