Goddington Loft Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Goddington starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Loft storage in Goddington

How we make loft storage for Goddington

Behind an eaves door, there is often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it doesn’t block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Goddington, we will see what’s there. Typical reasons to get in touch are unused space in a dormer and clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

An interwar house usually has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Goddington, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges around handles are touched most.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Pull-out drawers

The space behind a knee wall is deep and low, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. We plan them around any access the eaves need.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

How fitting works for loft storage

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Common questions about loft storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Goddington?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Chelsfield station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. We measure the way up along with the room itself. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
