Loft storage in Maypole, Bromley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Maypole starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

Loft storage for your home in Maypole

Loft storage in Maypole: what you get

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. We design them around what you need to store in Maypole. If you are living with clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and boxes and suitcases with no home, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Maypole, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Eaves cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Loft storage in Maypole: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Maypole were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 59%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Maypole. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 59% of homes in the streets around Maypole were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Where a post-war house has had its loft converted, the eaves and slopes can take fitted storage; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

For a flat near Knockholt station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Maypole Cottages, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Maypole is about 3 miles north-west of Orpington, in the London Borough of Bromley. Anywhere in Maypole, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. We list Maypole among 49 places we cover in Bromley.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits angled panels and plain fronts alike. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Pull-out drawers

A run of drawers along the knee wall can work like a long chest. The top can be a surface for books or lamps. We agree the layout during the design visit.

Common questions about loft storage

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Knockholt station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Maypole?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.

What we do not do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Altering the structure of the loft
  • Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
