Caring for painted furniture
These points come up often when people plan loft storage. They help whatever the room:
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
- Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
- Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
Loft storage for homes in Holloway Down
Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. We design them around what you need to store in Holloway Down. Most enquiries start with boxes and suitcases with no home and a boarded loft with no proper shelving; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
With a large share of homes around Holloway Down built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays with the house, and it uses the slopes in a way a standalone piece cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the storage a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. It is easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
Holloway Down homes and loft storage
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Holloway Down were built before 1919 (about 53%) and since 2000 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Holloway Down, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Terraced houses are home to about 37% of households in the area around Holloway Down, based on Census 2021. Many London terraces have converted lofts with eaves that can take storage.
If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity & St Augustine of Hippo, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If you live near West Ham Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
How to get a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

The problems loft storage solve
Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
- A converted loft with no fitted furniture
- A dormer that is not being used
For a family home near The Jenny Hammond Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether they measure the room themselves

Common questions about loft storage
Do you make loft storage for homes in Holloway Down?
Yes, Holloway Down is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
My house in Holloway Down is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.
