About our loft storage in East Village

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in East Village, we’ll look at what fits. If you are living with a boarded loft with no proper shelving and needing storage in a loft office, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around East Village built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Storage in East Village homes: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 68% of the housing in the neighbourhood around East Village, with about 12% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of East Village, Historic England’s list includes The Theatre Royal (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in East Village is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a flat near Stratford International station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near Chobham Academy, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

East Village is within the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles south-east of Plaistow. We design and make loft storage for homes in East Village and across Newham. We cover places right across Newham, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Here we cover the E15, E20 and E9 postcode area for loft storage. You will find streets here like Angel Lane, Major Road and Forbes Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for loft storage. Nearby, we also make loft storage in Temple Mills (1 mile north-west), Stratford (1 mile south-east), Maryland (1 mile south-east), Hackney Wick (1 mile south-west) and Holloway Down (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of Newham, our area takes in Plaistow (2 miles south-east), Canning Town (3 miles south-east), Forest Gate (2 miles east), East Ham (3 miles south-east), Upton Park (2 miles south-east) and Greengate (2 miles south-east).

What prompts loft storage in East Village

A dormer can feel like wasted space. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It adds storage without crowding the room.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.8 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

Your questions about loft storage in East Village

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Stratford International station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make loft storage for a home in East Village?

Yes, we work across Newham, East Village included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Electrical work in the loft
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan loft storage. They help before and after fitting:

  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Count the clothes you will need to hang

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.
