Loft storage in Locksbottom
About our loft storage in Locksbottom
The space behind the knee wall normally has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft. We look at this during the design visit in Locksbottom. Most enquiries start with boxes piled on loft boards and clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Locksbottom, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Eaves cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Fitted storage in Locksbottom
About 40% of the homes in the area around Locksbottom went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Locksbottom, Historic England’s list includes Thatched Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Farnborough Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Locksbottom joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
Close to South Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses like Down House, about 2.7 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

How fitting works for loft storage
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level.
Before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Getting a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Honest limits
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Adding or replacing insulation
- Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Sloped wardrobe tops

How we price loft storage
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How many doors and drawers there are
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
What prompts loft storage in Locksbottom
A sloping ceiling makes a standard wardrobe impossible. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It’s a common need in a loft bedroom.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Nowhere to store bags and boxes
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- A loft room with too many jobs
For a family home near Darrick Wood Infant & Nursery School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
What to check before you book
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
Common questions about loft storage
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Orpington station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make loft storage for homes in Locksbottom?
Yes, we work across Bromley, Locksbottom included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
