Loft storage in Petts Wood
Loft storage for homes in Petts Wood
Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. For a home in Petts Wood, it’s planned around your things. Typical reasons to get in touch are a dormer that isn’t being used and seasonal things cluttering the loft room, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Petts Wood, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece can’t reach. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

How fitting works for loft storage
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Starting with a design visit
To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Note how narrow the loft stairs are
- Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the storage, get in touch through our contact form and we will help.
Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.
Flats, leases and landlords
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Loft storage in Petts Wood: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Petts Wood, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 71%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Petts Wood is within about a quarter of a mile of the Station Square, Petts Wood Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 87% of households in the neighbourhood around Petts Wood, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Bromley Palace, about 2.6 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. If you live in a flat close to Petts Wood station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Crofton Junior School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Common questions about loft storage
Is Petts Wood in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes, Petts Wood is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Petts Wood?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is scribed to the slope and walls.
