Fitted storage in Crofton

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 57% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Crofton, with about 31% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Crofton include Crofton Court (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and The Lodge (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than half of the homes in the streets around Crofton (about 57%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. For a flat near Orpington station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Crofton Infant School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Loft storage in Crofton

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section made in our workshop fits up the stairs. It is a step that matters for any loft in Crofton. Typical reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Crofton, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and eaves cupboards are made to suit it.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make loft storage for a home in Crofton?

Yes, Crofton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Orpington station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

How fitting works for loft storage

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The edges around handles are touched most.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. The angled fronts match the ceiling, keeping the lines neat.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can match the skirting and doors.

Why bespoke in Crofton?

For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. We’ll give you an honest view during the design visit. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

See bespoke vs off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
