TV and media units for your home in Bishopsgate
TV and media units in Bishopsgate
TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across the City of London and the rest of London. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and games, controllers and remotes everywhere.
Many homes around Bishopsgate were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats in newer developments. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of TV and media units can add storage without crowding the space. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Honest limits
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
- Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

How fitting works for TV and media units
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.
Preparing the room
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Practical tips
Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.
Tag each lead at both ends to make future changes easier.
Questions from Bishopsgate
My home in Bishopsgate is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do you cover homes near London Liverpool Street station?
Yes. We cover all of the City of London and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
TV and media units in Bishopsgate: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Bishopsgate, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 41%) and before 1919 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Bishopsgate is within about a quarter of a mile of the Bishopsgate Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Bishopsgate is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which covers the whole City of London. Access, loading and timings are planned with that in mind.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Ethelburga, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Guild Church of St Ethelburga the Virgin, less than half a mile south of the centre of Bishopsgate, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near London Liverpool Street station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It works around service boxing too.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
