TV and media units in the City of London: what you get

We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including the City of London. If your home has a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and wasted space around the screen, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In many houses from the 1950s and 1960s, the living room has a wide window and a plain chimney breast or none at all. Around the City of London, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, and TV and media units can give a room like that a focus. Low cupboards with shelves over them can sit beside or below the window.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Check where the seating will go
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next

After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. We tidy as we go.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Built-in living-room furniture in the City of London

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around the City of London, with about 27% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of the City of London, 36 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The whole City of London is inside the Congestion Charge zone. Deliveries and fitting days are planned with the zone’s rules and the City’s loading restrictions in mind.

If you live near St Alphage Garden, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. Mansion House, about 0.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For an older house near St Olave Old Jewry, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

The City of London is one of London’s 33 local authority areas. Homes in the City of London are part of the area we cover for TV and media units, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.

Here we cover the EC4V, EC1A, EC2M and EC2Y postcode area for TV and media units. Our area takes in homes on streets like Aldermanbury Square, Monkwell Square and Paternoster Square, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. The City of London is near the A1 and A3; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for TV and media units include Barbican Estate (1 mile north), Bishopsgate (1 mile east), Finsbury (1 mile north), Aldgate (1 mile east) and St Luke's (1 mile north).

What’s near the City of London

The streets we cover here include those near Golden Fleece pub, Prior Weston Primary School and Children's Centre and Barts Health Archives and the streets around them. The City of London has its own railway station: London Cannon Street station. Other landmarks nearby include Gabriel's Wharf (0.8 miles south-west) and London Mithraeum (less than half a mile south). Open spaces near the City of London include Ludgate Hill.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is parking a problem for fitting in the City of London?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in the City of London?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How much will my TV unit cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

How do I get a quote?

Simply message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit.
