About our bespoke kitchens in Bishopsgate

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. Each dresser is made for its wall, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. If your home has cabinets for a narrow kitchen and tall larder storage, that’s what kitchens are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A newer kitchen may have a wide glazed door or a big window on one wall, which leaves fewer walls for cabinets. Since many homes around Bishopsgate date from 2000 onwards, tall larders and a peninsula, where there is room, can make up the storage. Wall cabinets are fixed into the studs or with fixings made for the board.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Check there is room around an island before planning one
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Deal with damp walls first

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. Their sizes shape the cabinets, so late changes can be tricky.

What it is made from

Larder and dresser units

Larders and dressers can fill an alcove or end a run in a way standard units cannot.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many kitchen doors and panels, as it stays stable and takes paint well.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard cabinets come in set widths, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Ours are made to fit the room from wall to wall. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. We start with how you use the kitchen and what isn’t working. It’s useful to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
  2. We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design.
  3. You get a written quote for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician. We do not arrange those trades, so it’s useful to book them early.

Preparing the room

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke kitchens in Bishopsgate: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 41% of the housing in the area around Bishopsgate, with about 22% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bishopsgate include Guild Church of St Ethelburga the Virgin (Grade I), less than half a mile south, and Church of St Helen (Grade I), under half a mile south. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Bishopsgate is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Close to Finsbury Circus? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For a family home near The London School of Barbering, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Ethelburga, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Bishopsgate

I live near London Liverpool Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across the City of London and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bishopsgate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
